4,661 blazes in California charred more than 425,000 acres; Big Sure still burning.
4th of July pyrotechnic shows across the country have have cancelled for reasons ranging from explosions at Chinese warehouses and closed ports to raging fires all over the nation, but especially California where the Governor has called in the National Guard.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger deployed the California National Guard today to help firefighters from Kern to the Oregon Border battle ongoing fires, the first time since 1977. The Guard’s aerial fleet was sent out last week and included Blackhawk helicopters. 300 National Guard troops and 800 California Conservation Corps members are being sent out immediately to assist nearly 20,000 firefighters who were called to address hundreds of lightening ignited fires in the Sierras.
All this plus a sluggish economy and reduced Chinese inventory of fireworks in (the world’s predominant manufacturer of fireworks used in pyrotechnic shows), has left many US towns without a big show this Friday.
